Sadiq Khan wins MP of the Year Award

Tooting MP Sadiq Khan won the inaugural MP of the year awards last night. The charity Mosaic which organised the awards held the ceremony at a packed Speakers House at the House of Commons last night.Accepting the highest award, the London MP, not normally known for being emotional, was visibly moved.To understand how I feel about this award you have to understand my journey: I was born in Tooting, schooled in Tooting. I met my wonderful wife in Tooting. My dear dad drove a bus through Tooting for over 20 years. And now I’ve won this award for representing the people of Tooting. It doesn’t get much better.”

Actually Khan won this award precisely because his work around social and racial justice, and equality for all spanned way beyond his constituency. As one of the Judges, I saw the amount of work that he undertakes in these areas on top of his Shadow Secretary role as Justice Minster.

What’s clear about Khan whether he is bringing faith groups together, applauding white working class communities for responding to the tragedy of Lee Rigby with calm and dignity, Khan does all of this and more, not for political gain, but because he truly cares. Looking at all the applications blind of who the MP was, his fantastically stood out.

Other awards went to Chris Grayling MP, Top Conservative; Caroline Lucas MP, Greens, Top newcomer; John Leach MP, Top Liberal Democrat;. Sadiq Khan, Top Labour.

MP’s like to be recognised for their work. As such the word will soon get around about who won. The hope is that these awards encourage MP’s to do much more in this area.

Lastly, the Speaker of the House John Bercow MP told the audience that as long as he was speaker, his official residence could be used for these prestigious awards.
